Western Governors University Scholarship (WGU) is a private, nonprofit, online American university based in Salt Lake City, Utah. The university was founded by 19 U.S. governors in 1997 after the idea was formulated at a 1995 meeting of the Western Governors Association.
To make the decision to earn an accredited, recognized, and affordable degree that much easier, online, nonprofit Western Governors University’s (WGU) is now offering $500,000 in Sage Scholarships.
Named for WGU’s mascot, Sage the Night Owl, the Sage Scholarship will help 250 students, from across the country, achieve their educational dreams. Only students who apply to WGU by June 30, 2018, are eligible to apply for the Sage Scholarship, which provides up to $2,000 per student.
Each Sage Scholarship will be applied at the rate of $500 per six-month term, renewable for up to four terms. Students enrolling in any of WGU’s 60 bachelor’s and master’s degree programs are eligible to apply for the scholarship. As this is a competitive program, scholarships will be awarded based on a candidate’s academic record, readiness for online study, and current competency, as well as other considerations.

Eligibility: To be eligible for this scholarship, students must:
- Complete an application for admission.
- Complete a scholarship application.
- Submit official transcripts of all prior college work.
- Complete the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA).
- Be officially admitted to WGU.

English Language Requirement: Applicants whose first language is not English are usually required to provide evidence of proficiency in English at the higher level required by the University.

Step 1: Review Scholarship Offerings: Check out the scholarships currently available at WGU and identify some that might be right for you. We don’t want you to unnecessarily waste your time with applying if you don’t meet the scholarship qualifications, so it’s worth checking the website to make sure there is an opportunity that fits you.
Step 2: Complete the Admissions Application: To be considered for any WGU scholarships, you must be provisionally accepted as a WGU student. Complete the admissions application and work with your enrollment counselor to move through the admissions process.
Step 3: Complete the General Scholarship Application: The general application is required for all WGU scholarships, and lets us learn more about you and which scholarships you may be eligible for. To access the application, you will need your MyWGU student portal credentials, which will be sent to you shortly after Step 2. You must complete the application within 60 days of your intended start date.
STEP 4: Review Recommended Opportunities And Apply For Them: Based on what you tell us in Step 3, we’ll let you know which scholarships you might be eligible for. Finish up by reviewing the recommended opportunities and completing the supplemental application for each scholarship you’d like to be considered for. These additional applications need to be submitted within 5 days of submitting the general application.
